The spiritual life of children is the focus The Gift of Love....Andrew, age7of research at the Center for Children and Theology. It is an outgrowth of the observations and reflections of teachers and catechists spanning over two decades.

Their work is a continuation of the study begun by Dr. Sofia Cavalletti over fifty years ago in Rome, Italy. Dr. Cavalletti, author of The Religious Potential of the Child,  is a noted Hebrew scholar and educator. Her work with children has spawned a program of religious formation called the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and has inspired a generation of religious educators and parents.

The child's relationship with God is marked by enjoyment, simplicity, wonder, and love. Their spirituality provides the whole church with an understanding of God that complements other prophetic voices in the church.

The Center for Children and Theology offers:

  • For adults doing research on the spiritual life of young children, we offer a place to observe children using the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, as well as a library of resources and documentation on the spiritual life of children.

  • An opportunity for catechists and parents to contribute to or join us in our research, through contribution to our publications, conferences, and submiting children's responses from the atrium.

  • Training courses for catechists to use the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

  • Scripture booklets and other materials for use with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

  • Occasional Papers, a collection of papers exploring the theology and spirituality of children.

  • ECHOES , a thematic report that focuses on various aspects of the spirituality of children and lists related resources.

  • Retreats for adults, using materials from the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to encounter the essence of our faith and the spirit of the child.

  • Consultation to parishes and schools using the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd throughout the country.

  • An introduction to the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and the spirituality of the child to adult continuing education classes, church groups, and university courses.
